Bogner Bombards EL34s I posted this question yesterday, but I don't think it got posted. I purchased a Bogner Shiva 1x12 combo recently. Of course, I had to take it apart and have a look-see. When I checked the cathode current on the EL34s, I was shocked to see that it was set to 70ma! I quickly checked the plate voltage and was even more shocked to find that it was 500V! That's 35W for zero signal plate dissipation. The Svetlana EL34s are rated for 25W. Now, the Shiva EL34s are housed in a stainless steel cage with a fan sucking air over them, but c'mon! I realize the 25W rating is for CONVECTION cooling but can these tubes be safely pushed THAT hard with air blowing over them. The amp has performed flawlessly for two long, hot sweaty gigs and one rehearsal, so maybe it'll be OK. Your comments please.... (Oh, one other thing, when I tried to reduce the cathode current, the pot bottomed out at 60ma! Apparently, this is no mistake. Could this be one of the ingredients in Reinhold Bogner's "secret sauce"? This amp IS the sweetest thing I've heard in 27 years of playing.) Thanks, Dave Charneski |
