67 Bassman Questions
Hi,

I have a 67 Bassman that has been blackfaced (thanks Richie!!). I have been playing around with it to get the best settings for tone. What I have found is that I really dig the bass input with the deep switch engaged. Good beef and stays cleaner louder. So where can I get some ideas on mods for this Bassman?

Thanks,
Ted

Ted,
Try the Boxer Amp Page at the following URL.

I am also in the middle of a '68 Bassman project and have gotten some good info from this page.
Have Fun, BC

Hey Ted

What are looking to get out of it. The Bassman's are pretty basic so they are great platforms to work with IMHO.

I betcha these guys here can go on for days with stuff to do to these. And I hope they do, my printer is ready.

I got a 71' I'm looking to rebuild next. Got some Ideas I'm going with. Going to build up the normal channel/driver/output back to 6G6-B specs for something different than my 66'. The Brownface Torres claims have a bit more funk and bit than the Blkface. I worked on a 6G6-B for a friend and it sounded pretty good. Wasn't a true representation since the PT had been replaced and was putting out about 50vdc higher than quoted on the schem. Which could explain it staying cleaner a bit more into the volume range. Which would free up also 1/2 the triode for a 5F6A type in the Bass channel.

Also thinking in the 66'. Paralelling the first triode on the bass channel, and using the unused 1/2 of the second 12AX7 after the tone stack for recovery for perhaps a bit thicker/gainer tone from the Bass Channel.

Lots of things to try.
Good luck

So you are the guy behind the Boxer Amp site? The lawyers from Mesa Engineering were asking about it... < g >

If you are looking for more radical things to do with your '71 Bassman head you might take a look at the latest layout drawings for the conversion to a hotrodded 5F6A tweed. Fellow AMPAGER RJ Wilcox has been working on the design, too, and I've incorporated most of his suggestions in the following drawings:

The first drawing uses a post-PI mv while the second uses a pre-PI mv. The design has moved closer to the Pignose G40V (from which it was based), which was designed by Dennis Kager (who also designed the Sundown Rebel amps, I believe). The changes to the unboosted tone stack were values suggested by Bruce Collins of Mission Amps, who also contributed the high/low input jack wiring (using a 33k series resistor on the grid tube pin to reduce noise). So this amp mod is really turning into an AMPAGER project. Speaking of the input jack arrangement, I'm experimenting with using a 220k to 470k resistor to ground on the #2 input to optimize the gain for a LP (the #1 input is for a vintage-style strat). So you can switch from a strat to a LP without having to adjust the gain settings... (Does anybody really use the #2 jack of your BF/SF amp for guitar? I figured I ought to put it to work doing something constructive!)

P.S. I got my bassman head on my dining room table right now and it will not move until the project is completed!

Funny you should mention that, they called me the other day. I pacified them by telling them I own 4 Boogies. Didn't mention I just sold one and traded the other. Anyway, I sent them your way, seemed quite interested in your little site after I briefly mentioned it.. :Þ

I have checked that out previously actually, have been very impressed with what you got going there on that project. I haven't been able to talk myself into going whole hog with it though.

Is this the document I've been meaning to e-mail you about that I keep getting a error trying to download--bad link?

Strangly enough, I do.

Keep up the good work Steve

Probably... I just checked and although I could right-click the link and save it to disk, the file was in fact not there. But I just uploaded it so it is there now:
