Sometimes it might depend on the socket brand used. For 12AX7 you can use 5/8. and for the 6V6 1" to 1 1/4" Some are a little bigger. just measure the sockets you will be useing. What i mean is some of the sockets mounting holes are close to the socket hole.So you want to enough room, but if you make it too big, you will not be able to drill for the mounting holes. If you are going to borrow the punches, get an assortment. Some of the Marshall sockets are bigger. in metric sizes [i would guess] Same with the porcelin type euorpeians. Hope this gives you an idea. Others will probably post what they use.[Richie] |

Most sockets I have used for projects were 3/4" for 12AX7 and 1 1/8" for Octals. But like Richie says, it really depends on the type of socket you have. Just my $.02 Ben |

As the others have already said, depends on the type/brand of socket. If you visit the Angela site (http://www.angela.com/), and look at the pages for tube sockets, you'll see the variety of hole sizes for 9 pin and octal sockets (Angela is kind enough to list this for their sockets). If you want to cover all the bases, try to get all his punches running from 5/8-1/1/4 inches. Be sure to measure the sockets though and pick the right punch. Once you make a hole, it's pretty hard to use a larger punch to make it bigger (hard that is to center the punch in the hole), and of course impossible to make a hole smaller! Steve |

3/4" for Novals (12A_7 etc) 1-1/8" for most Octal sockets. I use #4 hardware for noval, and #6 for octal (bolts, lock washers & nuts) |

You don't find them in hardware stores; but if there's a fastener warehouse nearby (we have on in Poughkeepsie), ask for "keps" nuts. These are nuts that have the lockwasher built-on. I use stainless machine screws and keps nuts for just about everything. |
