Building a 2x12 cab with Jensens yourself
I was offered a pair of Jensen 12" speakers (rated 30 watts RMS) from about 1968. I don't know the codes, thier are a bunch of serial numbers on them.

Anyway, I'm interested in building a 2 x 12 extension cab for my Fender Blues Jr.

Does anyone have a good source for blueprints for a 2x12 cab design. I know about all the equations used for design (seems confusing and hard to get specs on the speaker to calculate) and I was just wondering if there's a cab design I can copy. I was thinking of rear loading the speakers to give more low end, closed back with a port to preserve some of the highs.

Thanks in advance for the info.

I don’t think amp makers used equations to design their cabs. It was more a question of how big a box was needed to get it all in. Why not find a 2 x 12 you like the sound of and copy that ? A combo has to be open back because of the heat but this is an extension cab so why not make part of the back removable so you can try open, closed or ported ?

I can’t hear much difference between front and rear loading for guitar use. Rear loading is supposed to give less treble rather than more bass. Closed back or ported should give more bass rather than preserve the highs.

I don't think they'll give you the plans, but Magic Parts (Ruby Tubes, etc.) offer finished cabinets in choices of tolex & tweed covering with various grill cloths, includind a 2 x 12 closed back design made to resemble the famous Fender cabinet. You may have to go thru a dealer to get price & delivery, but I've seen the workmanship and it's decent.

If you're good with cabinetmaking, and you have the tools & space, you'll surely be building rather than buying. The above was just an option.

If these were mine, I would put them in a closed back cabinet as small as the two speakers would allow. This would then resemble the early 60 model bassman cab. Pack the interier with fiberglass batting, rear mount the speakers and use lots of screws on the back. Oh and use at least 1/2 " multi-ply plywood; the more plys the better.

This makes an easy to transport speaker with good bass response without hurting the mids.
