DR popping noise
My Silverface (black-face modded) Deluxe Reverb has developed an irregular popping sound. Uncorrelated with input, sometimes happens if the amp is on but not being played. Usually takes a couple of minutes after the amp is started.

It sounds like flipping the standby switch.

Should I replace the filter caps?
They look like they've been replaced once,
but I don't know how old they are.

The pop happens, then nothing for 10 minutes, then another pop.

Advice?

First, try the Tube Amp Debug Page (http://www.eden.com/~keen/) for the section on popping noises.

R.G., the page was helpful.
I think the problem was a bare wire on the power tube that was bent too close to one of the socket lugs. I bent it away a little, and the problem disappeared.

I had thought of replacing the plug and rewiring the switch so that the ground switch was bypassed (right now it is inoperable, because I rewired it correctly for a 3 pin plug) and that the extra AC socket is switchable.

Any big problems with this? Basically I would run the hot AC wire to the fuse, then the on/off switch, and then add a wire from the on/off swicth back to the AC socket.

The problem is mechanical (the AC socket wires
are crimped and soldered in) and that the green Chasis ground from the power cord is soldered in so heavily that I would need to buy a solder gun to get it loose.

Any advice?

Bare wire on socket tube - that will do it all right.

I don't see any problem with switching the AC outlet assuming that the power switch is rated for enough current to handle whatever you plug into it.

The mechanical problems are going to have to have mechanical solutions. Would replacing the whole AUX power socket do it? possibly with the help of splicing wires and covering the splices with a couple of layers of shrink wrap? Paying proper attention to safety and routing?

Other than that, all I can recommend is to dig in.
