amp resistor types Hi All,,, Quick question about plate load 100k and 220k res. Will it matter if these are carbon comp or film type??? Specificaly this is for the Vox AC15 I'm building but would probably apply to any amp. Seems there are mixed opinions on this. I know about the wattage issue but it seems metal film would be better. Is there really a tone difference??? Thanks very much... Steve K |

You'll get both opinions. Metal films are definitely quieter and will not have the drift problems that carbon comps will. I can't hear any difference in tone between the two types (when the carbon ones are new and haven't deteriorated, anyway) but that may just be my undiscriminating ear. Some people I respect swear that carbons sound "browner" somehow. I think that metal films are probably more neutral and less colored than any other type. I think that the only way for you to solve this one is to do it both ways and make YOUR ears happy. The additional cost for a second set of resistors is very small. In fact, it would be a useful bit of anecdotal evidence for the group - Why don't you put in two resistors for the first preamp tube (as things that happen there are most easily heard at the speaker) and a temporary switch to let you flip between the two (while standby is on, natch). If you put in all metal film except the first preamp plate resistor and do the switch, it should make for an excellent test. |

Thanks for the info RG,,, Think I'll try both. I am a skeptic about it making an audible difference for sure but you're right that its probably subjective (at least maybe in our minds eye only level signal types would make a difference because of the capacitance factor of the resistors that I've read about, but the power load resistors??? We'll see... Thanks again, Steve K |
