7199 substitute
Has anyone tried a 6GH8 as a sub for a 7199? If you have, are/were there any problems? I've got a chassis froma Kay bass amp, a weak 7199 and a bunch of 6GH8's I'd like to try if it's worth the rewire...TIA for any comments

I haven't used a 6GH8 but I have used a 6AN8A. Not much to do there, other than rewiring the socket. Let us know how your swap works out if you do it.

The hifi community uses 6AN8, 6GH8, and 6U8 as subs for the 7199. All different pinouts but all seem to work. Switching to one of the alternates from a 7199 is common for the technically adept amp hacker on old Dynaco amps. Go ahead.

Marc,

I've done this mod to my Dyna ST-70, FWIW. I got a Sound Values replacement board for my Dyna that is designed to use the 6GH8A instead of the 7199. It works great. From what I understand, the only differences between the two tubes are the pinout, and the 7199 has a twisted filament to reduce hum. Other than that I believe that they are electrically identical.

Hope this helps

I tried this mod on an old Dynaco and IMO the 7199 sounds "bloomier". I went back to the 7199. I may have had a bad NOS 6AN8A but I doubt it.
