What type of amp to build Okay here's the deal: I'm new to amp building, but I guess the best way to learn is by doing. I'd like to build an amp, but I don't know what to build. I'd like to keep it simple (one channel, one gain stage, etc.) to make it easier to build. I'd also like to keep the power output conservative (under 30 watts) so I can use it at home as well as at gigs using an extension cab. I also am interested in doing something different, because I don't like copying things that I can go out and buy. I really like the power section of a Vox AC-30, but I don't like the preamp. Anyone know how I can bastardize a Vox power section and a small, single stage preamp? |

Hi Brian,, I just started building my first DIY amp and also like the AC30 so I decided to use that design for the power section. I am going to start with the Top Boost preamp and am leaving design room for a second experimental preamp channel. I will modify the preamp components as the top boost is too bright for my taste but acording to the many gurus on this list it can be modified for a warmer tone if desired... I'll wait till I get the first channel built before deciding on the second, but just keep digging around and you'll eventually find an interesting preamp section to try it with. I hate to say this as I'm sure you've heard it before but be carefull and study up abit on tube electronic theory as these are very dangerous pieces of equipment with lethal voltages... Best luck and let us know how you make out... Steve K |
