The bobbin and wire back-lit over a white piece of paper seems to do the trick just fine for me. I can see the whole bobbin as it spins as if it's sitting still, so I can definitely see if it's wobbling out of parallel or if the wire is off target. Of course, it's easier with black bobbins than cream, but it still works well.
