Re: Pickup parts questions
Allstar Magnetics will sell to individuals but their minimum order is $75 last check. On the bright side, it means you can get a huge variety of magnets, rod and bar, for that.

I say go for the Stewmac flatwork but get your mags from Allstar. I tried to magnetize a set of A5 rods from Stewmac but A5 is anisotropic, meaning you can't reverse the magnetic field. But since you can't look at an uncharged rod mag and tell which way is supposed to be North or South, there's no way to tell whether you have the mags in right or upside down. At least not that I know of.

Somehow I managed to put them all in upside down, or at least that's what it sounded like, because the pickup ended up sounding very dark and very weak. Must have been charging them all from the wrong direction. (Maybe somebody else here knows about how to work with uncharged A5's but not me.)

Allstar's mags come pre-charged so there's no problem.

Alnico 2, 3, and 4 are isotropic so there is no right or wrong way to put them in the bobbin, except for sideways...
