I'd second all those points, particularly the baseplate suggestion. When I visited Tim Mills at Bareknuckle pickups he made a point about not attaching the polepieces to the baseplate. Also simulations show that attaching the plate directly to the poles can spread the magnetic field, weakening the flux available at the strings.  
 
FWIW, you mention that it is 'vintage potted' so that implies that it was potted like the originals, where the wax has not completely penetrated the windings. In which case that's probably your answer.  
 
In my opinion a good single coil should be microphonic, not to the point of picking up body noise, but enough to hear your fingers on the strings. I think there's something dead about fully potted pickups, a little too controlled. Mine can squeal like a pig but they sound great!!
