| MKB | Re: EZ (and slightly risky) potting My potting setup is even simpler than that, just a pyrex bowl floating in a pot of boiling water. It takes a bit of trial and error to get the amount of water and the amount of wax balanced so that things don't go awry when the pickup is placed in the wax. You also have to be careful to keep the water out of the wax. All in all, it works pretty well. I read a column by Barry Lipman in "Guitar for the Practicing Musician" magazine a few years back, where he recommended using varnish to pot a pickup. Like a fool I tried it first on three (yes, three) Gibson patent sticker humbuckers. The bobbins on each warped and distorted to the point they became unusable. So please DON'T try varnish. |
