*It is much harder for US companies to compete for foreign contracts due to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. That Act makes bribery and kickbacks serious felonies for all involved. For many other governments it is the only way business is conducted.*  
 
Yup, it is kind of an uneven playing field when you have to compete with operators doing *honest* business in one part of the world which would not be recognizable as honest in the US.  
 
In my case when it comes to international commerce, all the major employers have had to become foreign-owned so that they can survive against the traditional foreign companies operating in US ports.  
 
I mean if you are going to get involved with the millions of barrels of petroleum and products coming in from South America, Africa, or Arab states, you need to be able to visit with those executives in their offices in order to make a sales pitch before you have a chance to represent them in a US port to begin with. But you will never get far unless you have a briefcase full of cash to buy the work just like the overseas competitors have always done.
