| SpeedRacer | Re: Oil for food it would be more productive IMHO to stay on topic rather than change the topic. Since you chose to change it completely, I'll take that to mean that you concede the point. That said, yes, the US was owed a lot of money by Germany post WW-I. AFAIK it had nothing to do with the US staying out of WW-II. If it did, please present some evidence to support that conclusion. Coincidence does not imply causality.. and the monies we were owed were not for Nuke plants and weapons systems.. As for how many lives could have been saved.. now you appear to be trolling. Here is a bit about how much money the Germans "owed": Point 19 of the Armistice: "Nineteen - The following financial conditions are required: Reparation for damage done. While such armistice lasts no public securities shall be removed by the enemy which can serve as a pledge to the Allies for the recovery or reparation for war losses. Immediate restitution of the cash deposit in the national bank of Belgium, and in general immediate return of all documents, specie, stocks, shares, paper money, together with plant for the issue thereof, touching public or private interests in the invaded countries. Restitution of the Russian and Rumanian gold yielded to Germany or taken by that power. This gold to be delivered in trust to the Allies until the signature of peace." In easily understandable terms, that reparation amounted to some $132 Billion Gold Marks under the London Ultimatum, or roughly $31 Billion in 1921 dollars (not debt to the US, total war debt). Germany had no practical ability to repay this amount and with the combined economic collapse across Europe post WW-I the allies in some ways paved the way for the brown shirts as the German middle class saw their life savings evaporate and their country plunge into hyperinflation. The German people in their desperation were ready to hear the fanatical ramblings of a lunatic. Of the monies that the US sent to Europe to aid in rebuilding post WW-I - close to 3% of our GDP - the majority was never repaid. And we came back for WW-II, late as my Scottish friends are keen to note, but we came all the same. |
