| SpeedRacer | Re: Gas prices on the rise, Bush help his buddies get ri he IS shortchanging America's future by relaxing the demands on automakers to increase efficiency, and underfunding(ideologically as well as financially) the developement for alternative fuel sources. ..could not agree more. 50% of our oil goes into our cars. Due to eco and social factors, per-capita miles driven per year is up and of course when the big 3 came whining about the 31(!!) year old CAFE standard like it was some recent tree-hugger conspiracy ol' W took their side so they could keep selling tarted up pickups as $50k SUV's so that golf widows and lawyers could toddle off to the mall and eat 2 parking places while getting 8 mpg. National avg MPG is down the past several years (not surprisingly). The most patriotic thing we could probably do is buy hybrid cars. I don't drive a hybrid, but the mach5 gets 23 overalll (sitting in traffic) and 28 to 30 on the highway when all the other folks get out of the way. Not perfect, but a lot better than a suburban. The Chinese oil thing is only getting worse (for a long time to come most likely) and then we have India to follow them. Get used to it. BMW has made great strides with H2 powered cars, and the choice of that vs having trillions of tons of poisonous batteries in electric cars to dispose of, clean up after, etc is a no brainer IMHO. |
