If you want tightness, stick with good ceramics.  
Look for NOS 6L6's too, pref Sylvania's if you can find any. Even a used pair is better than a new pair of some of the recent issue tubes. They just have it going on IMHO. Also make sure you have the best 12AT7 you can find in the PI position. If the phase inverter is not happening, the whole amp will suffer.  
 
 
1 - make sure your bass knob is DOWN (like 2 or 3)  
2 - make sure your bright switch is OFF  
3 - boost mids, back off on treble. May want to mod tone stack to 5F6-A values. It's easy to try anyhow.  
4 - If amp gets too clean with good outputs and PI, disconnect the trem intensity pot. This will make the amp open up and scream.  
5 - You can try a SS rectifier to tighten things up, but personally I am not fond of them in this amp. If you roll off the bass, I think things will come together pretty well.
