A leaky filter capacitor can make this kind of stange noises. You can spend a lot of time trying to find the problem if the filter caps are bad and you don't change them.  
 
I always change the filter caps on an amp that is is 20 years old or more. It solve a lot of noise problems and it improve the bass response.
