No, it's not the guitar or lead. I'd already checked that. The non-shorting jack is only there to see if connecting it only via the chassis helped. Although it is interesting that I don't get an open circuit hum, turning up the volume without anything plugged in.  
 
As I said, I could just use Marshall style sockets, but they just don't look right.
