Rethinking this tone-degradation thing, makes no sense...  
 
-PAF's had covers (and are the basis of all good humbucker sound IMHO)  
-Gretch's had covers too  
-Tele Neck  
-Trisonics  
 
very many pickups had metal covers, most of which are not considered to have "degraded" sound or "loosing highs".  
 
Wha'sup with the covers-are-bad opinion?
