So here goes...I once had a custom-made solid body mandolin in the shape of a Gibson Explorer. It was second-hand when I bought it but I knew the Luthier who made it. He said that he'd fitted it with a Strat-type EMG single coil. When I had it the pickup had been changed to something with six poles. It sounded pretty bland but worked OK. My guess is that what would work best is anything with a blade rather than individual poles.
