| RedHouse | Re: Why so few nickel covers ? Yeah! I hear ya soapbarstrat, I've been looking for a set of nickel (or chromed) strat covers for some time now. Fender had some in the 2003 catalog on a custom Strat, but when I emailed them about getting some they said they were from the custom shop only and I would have to order a whole guitar from the custom shop. (nice 'eh?, I want nickel covers, they say I need to buy the whole guitar?) I had a set made by DiMarzio (single coil strat pickups) back in the 70's which I thought sounded great, they had nickel (or chrome) covers with holes so the pole pieces came through and IMHO didn't have any negative tonal effects. (I tried the pickup with/without the covers on) I noticed "Lace" has an ad in the latest Vintage Guitar Magazine and was thinking of sending them an e-mail, asking if they would sell a set of covers. Yeah, I know popular opinion is that covers "affect" the sound BUT in my opinion that sound is a valid sound just as the Rickenbacker guitar pickups have "a sound" (and covers) and so did original PAF's and likewise Gretch (and TV Jones) pickups have their sound (and covers). It's a damn shame we must ALL be forced into the same 'ol plastic-covers-strat sound, or open-coil-humbucker sound? (ok, so it's still possible to cover-your-own Humbuckers) If I knew those Strat pickup covers were gonna disappear from the face of the earth I sure would have bought up a bunch of sets back in the day. (and they would now probably be the latest retro trend!) |
