| Borsanova | Re: in between sounds aren't so good The out-of-phase sounds are not always to be considered crappie. I got a Mexican Strat DeLuxe, which has as a special feature a switch that puts together the neck and the bridge pickup and, when the switch selector is in position 2, all three picks together. These are two interesting additional sounds: the two extreme picks together make up for a slight tele twang and all three together for a much mellower sound. But my guitar really surprized me when I added a phase switch for the neck pickup for three more combinations which are now among my absolute favorites. My Strat has now ten combinations out of 13 possible (considering only parrallel and not serial wiring). The neck and the middle out of phase give a very acute twang that is really great for obtaining that old Shadows sound ("Apache"). All three together with the neck out of phase gives a very thin sound with a strong effect as if you were playing your guitar through a 70s transistor radio (remember Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here?) I think this sound is also used on the first two Police albums. I like to use it for reggae rhythm and for some very relaxed "latin Beach Music" solos. But my absolute favorite is the neck and bridge out of phase. Since the distance between those two picks is larger, the out-of-phase effect is less evident, making up for an all in all fuller sound (though not as full as the in phase combinations). I really like the charming twang of this combination and could listen to it for hours. That's why I currently play at least 50% of my stuff with this combination and when I pick up my guitar I always find the switches in this position. The out of phase sound of the bridge and the middle combined (which seems to be the case on your guitar) is probably the thinnest/crappiest of them all and I consider it quite useless. That is why I didn't realize it on my guitar. Thus, if you want to try an out-of-phase sound on a Strat, start with the neck pickup and then make sure you can play it together with the bridge. If you like some thinner sounds, I tell you that you won't regret it. Cheers Peter |
