RedHouseRe: Les Paul Guitar playability question
The problem with just raising the stop bar is you loose "coupling" when the stop bar isn't locked down.
(you can read more about that in Dan Erlewin's article in Vintage Guitar magazine)

The method Dan recommended was to place jam-screws down inside the inserts but that requires shortening the studs, the spacer method I devised is easily reversable...

Make a couple stainless steel spacers which look very much like thick washers (about 1/8" thick, or however much you want to raise the tailpiece) with an OD the size of the bottom land of your stud, and an ID that allows the stud to pass through, place the spacer on the stud and crank it down tight pinching the spacer between the stud land and the insert, voila! you've raised the stud 1/8" AND maintained coupling!.

If you want to change it back to stock, just unscrew the studs and remove your spacers.
