Yeah that would work, you couldn't experiment with tube rectifiers though, I don't know if that's important to you or not. A four diode bridge rectifier should give 329 Vdc according to fender.  
 
You could ask the 18 watt guys if there are any good deals out there, they build plenty of 2 x el84 amps. http://www.18watt.com
