I've also taken the pot out about a dozen times, tried several different ways to get the string on. Some of what I've tried... wrapping a guitar string around the end of the spring to pull it onto the loop in the string. Removing the screw that the string is anchored to. Taking the mount that the pot is on, wrapping the string, then put it back in. Next time I'm going to try to punch out the rear bar that the little wheel is on to make slack in the string. Good luck.
