Some comments:  
 
1) A 5% restocking fee is very reasonable. If I was Fuller, I'd charge more.  
 
2) I don't consider Fulltone products junk.  
 
3) Perhaps you should have let your son try one at a store before buying it. Distortion pedals can really be a personal thing. Also they tend to sound different with different amps.  
 
I have a '69 and like it. I have other distortion pedals I like as well. With some amps, the '69 is absolutely amazing. With others, it's mediocre. Moral is to try it with your own amp before you buy.  
 
Also, does your son have the "turn everything up to ten" mentality? That doesn't work with fuzz boxes. If I was Fuller and received a pedal back with all knobs set at ten, I'd increase my restocking fee to 100% because the customer was potentially a bonehead.  
 
Finally, I believe online retail stores like www.gtrheaven.com sell fulltone effects at prices lower than Mike Fuller offers. Keep them in mind next time.
