I then spray right on the bare metal. I try and do it on a hot dry day when I can bake it in the sun afterward. I've tried primer on some boxes and they never came out as good. The paint didn't seem as tough for some reason. I don't think Ibanez primes theirs either. As usual someone will chime in and chastize me for saying anything so, YMMV.
