I'm just guessing here but maybe it has more to do with the original labeling of the control panel. in = bright, normal=mic. For normal channel, you wanted to have more bandwidth. For the mic you would want to limit the bandwidth to both upper and lower frequencies. There are surly more knowledgeable folks here than me though.
