I don't understand how your method of storage can help to conserve the magnetic strength of the rods. The following two sites suggest that the way to store magnets is to shunt the magnetic field back to the opposite pole leaving as little of the field in free space as possible.

Your method places like poles right next to each other. The keeper plate is positioned at a point where it doesn't do anything to conduct the overall field back to the opposite pole.  
 
Thanks for your input but because I don't understand this method I think I'll take Jason's advice untill I know better.
