How do they differ from "old fashioned" pickups?

Ben	How do they differ from "old fashioned" pickups? I mean my red lace sensor tele bridge pickup isn't active but it gives out something that "old fashioned" pickups don't.     I'd liek to know what's happening here.. Ive done searches to try and find more on the subject but not much is coming back from it.     Anyone has links or infos to share on the matter?     Thanks
