I have carved bobbins out of wood. Actually, I am building a wooden bobbin at the moment that is the same size shape as a P90 (hight and width)on the bass strings(Strings EAD), which tapers to a thinned width(and greater highth) at the treble end (Strings GBE) (Like a strat.)  
If anyone is interested, I can draw a diagram and email it to you, when I get the time.
