Thanks, mang. By that definition, the PAF humbucker design has two active coils, no dummy. It and stacked humbuckers are more like two single coil pickups sharing opposite ends of the same magnet. The Kinmans have a magnetic upper coil and a steel core lower coil; they are magnetically shielded from each other. The lower one is the dummy. Chris Kinman has three US patents that I could find. The abstract & frontpage drawings tell a lot and when you compare them to Dimarzio's Virtual Vintage patent, you can see why they were feeling a bit moody. Kinman's patents 5668520, 5834999, 6103966 can be easily found via the Patent Office search page at <http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/srchnum.htm> Dimarzio's VV patent is 05811710. You may need a TIFF file plug-in for the images, but they refer you to a download site. -drh -- | |
