That, in fact, seems short sighted or contradictory as it's leaving much out of the equation. I personally could not tell you how the neck construction of a 54 RI affects the tonality of that guitar vs a later "thin" neck with the volute. But I can figure in how a mahogany body w/ hard maple cap and set in mahogany neck may affect things... Re-reading your post, I would say that's probably what that maker does as well. I say if you like the pickups, leave them alone. At least stay with them long enough to get a good feel for them and try different pickup settings to dial them in. If you don't like them after that, consider getting pickups made to suit you, your style and your gear...
