Andy | Re: Pickup "copies" rant I agree there is a lot of over egging a pickups qualities by most of us. Some of us here make pickups out of interest, some as a hobby, some as a sideline and a few for a living. I'm one of the last group and in order to live I have to sell pickups - I could just put out a list of dc readings, gauss, inductance, capacitance, resonant frequency and even Q, but they alone don't tell anyone how a pickup sounds. This can only be done comparatively - sounds like someone playing whatever. The only real way of finding how a pickup will sound is to actually put it into the players guitar, but first they have to narrow down their search to the most likely contenders thus the comparative, or "sounds like advertising/statements". Individual concepts of what a vintage sound is different, everyone has their own tastes and preferences but we have to judge against something. If not vintage then what? Andy |
