I know of one fairly famous maker who foil wraps all his coils. In fact EMG used to - don't know if they still do.  
 
Whatever 'tis best to fully ground any wrapping, can be awkward to get a good ground with aluminium foil but a good solder will do the job - but be careful you don't damage the coils.
