It's certainly not up to me to dictate how a legend like him sets his tone controls or his pickups. I was just surprised by how much beefier and fuller his tones were on that recording. Of course there is a difference between the tone the player or audience members here and what the mike in front of the amp hears, soit may be more a reflection of the recording engineers than BB's own tastes. And yes, like you I found JB Lenoir to be the sort of guy you could sit down and talk with and feel connected with immediately.
