Re: Interesting reactions...
Bernt and Luijo,
I feel bad that something like that happened also. Watching the news, it's unapparent exactly why it happened, maybe political because of her stand on the Euro?
We Americans are not all calloused and insulated. We are getting tired. And, we are you. Everyone seems to hate America these days...without taking into account that we are the world's ancestors all mixed together. Sure, it ain't perfect. We have WAY too many murders, WAY too many abuses of our freedoms that are threatening them, and overall, for a country that is one of the most diverse ethnically and religiously in the world, it's a wonder we do as well as we do, even. There were and are a LOT of Americans trying to help oppressed people all over the world to rid themselves of murderers of their own people and tyrannical regimes. Why? Money? Could be. Control. Basically, I think we want to see people to govern themselves, so they can make decisions that are good for all, instead of just a few. (We need to get some of that back, ourselves). And, I am free to write this without having stormtroopers busting down my door. (Well, if Ashcroft had his way...)
I think my point is, we are not uncaring. We are weary. The only reason I saw the story on Anna Lindh is because I caught BBC World News. I think everyone here should catch it. It gives us another view of how people are perceiving us than our own newscasts.
I will agree that we APPEAR self-centered. And some foreign news sources are probably "fair and balanced" (oopps, can i say that?)..but if any of us get's ALL our perceptions of others entirely from our own domestic news sources, NONE of us gets the entire story, and sometimes, no story at all.
My condolensces to you for your loss Bernt. Please keep in mind not to paint everyone with the same brush. Although we have murder in the streets at the highest rate of any industrialized nation, we are still a bit shocked about recent events. We see terrorism on the news for the past decade or more, and, we feel bad, but what can we do? Now, we just have to protect ourselves. Maybe we got a little jaded. But now we know. Now we do something. Now we are preoccupied.
Take care,
Brad
