| sr | Re: Hackers watching ebay like vultures!!! there are many. less convenient - perhaps. better, yes. server side, Netware kicks sand on MSFT. Novell Directory services shame microsofts AD. Example? try partitioning in active directory. (gd lk!) File system and directory security is also an order of magnitude better.. standards based apps are also - holy cow - standard (as opposed to bunged!) php, perl, apache, java (the sun kind, not the redmond kind..) what a concept. There are app servers where you are stuck with windows, but for email & file and print + portal services you can get rid of Windows and never miss it. Solaris and other 'nix flavors are great on the server side. I could put my Sun and Netware boxes behind sheetrock.. they are that reliable. For relentless uptime they are 2nd only to my beloved Ciscos. client side, macs are still happening (although out of the running due to hight hardware costs many times) i386 boxen running linux are a great option. star office is good and free.. MSFT won't get sued over bugs.. at least I don't see it happening.. part of DOJ hearings on anti-trust centered on the fact that a variety of defense systems run on MSFT OS (seriously) and revealing the code to windows would jeapordize national security. ponder that for a while. for all the softies who say linux has as many bugs, ponder this: yes it does - but that is with a worldwide hacker population READING THE SOURCE CODE 24/7/365. Windows code is a big mystery, and kids can still find just as many ways to break it. Imagine if they could peruse the source. (ouch!) mainframe programmers understood buffer checking 25 years ago. MSFT managed to lose that knowledge and has spent the past 10+ years getting pounded on the same basic exploit.. buffer overflow.. buffer overflow.. HELLO? IS THERE ANYBODY IN THERE? They are like the living proof of being doomed to repeat the past they can't seem to learn from. All that money and talent.. oh, and wonder who is funding the SCO lawsuit against IBM and others? Looks like MSFT. IBM is going to kick their butts though.. old school style. No worries. SCO is screwed, big time. MSFT settled with SCO very early on and from what I understand agreed to help fund the case. Weasels. That's my free prediction and worth what you paid for it. MSFT had nothing to lose, and everything to gain. They are scared of linux (and should be!) |
