| previous: sr 700,000 gross? How many of them are... -- 5/25/2003 11:51 PM |
| Dr Krumpet | Re: About "foreign" workers..fwiw You said: "With tight process control and a clear vision of what you want as an end product, there is no shortage of competent coders out there who can do the job." My point exactly. There is no labor shortage of IT people in the US. It's completely a myth. So why do we have H1B visa people here competing for American jobs? What's your point? Are you saying you agree that we don't need H1B visa IT workers in the US? Or instead are you saying that we should allow them here anyways so that pay rates for American IT workers can be forced lower? Your point about statistics has a flaw in it in that you can say that about any set of numbers I give you, no matter how finely I qualify them. My guess is that you are in management and not a hard core technical person. Am I right? Seems like you don't like to listen to the facts and instead like to push an agenda that keeps labor costs low and keeps management profits high. To clarify, the 700,000 represent those on the unemployment roles. I'll leave it up to you to contact your state employment agency to find out what their definition is. I'm sure it does not include people who quite their jobs as you suggested. Specialists such as SA's and DBA's have especially been hard hit by H1B visa workers because in general they were the highest paid IT personel. I know of several Oracle Contract DBA's who routinely used to make $200,000+/yr as consultants. Because of a huge inrush of H1B Oracle people, the Oracle contract rates have easily dropped to half that. Contrary to what you say, there are still many specialist jobs in the US. A substatntial portion of them are held by H1B visa workers from asia. That in part explains why your Sun SA friend is having a difficult time finding a job. Get rid of the H1B's and suddenly there will be all kind of specialist jobs for Americans. |
