| aron | Vintage sound.... I was lucky enough to play a couple of 57 and 59 Strats in great condition. The first thing I noticed where that the pickups did not sound extremely quacky or bright. Nor did they sound "powerful". I was assuming that in the quest for _more_ of the "strat" sound, that this was somehow related to a vintage tone.... this is incorrect based on my findings. Therefore I have come to the conclusion (based on the guitars I used) that: Yes, Bill Lawrence 280s pickups do sound close to a vintage tone - minus a bit of what makes a single coil sound like a single coil. The 280s is very good. Fralins - have a much more alive tone and response than the vintage pickups I tried. They are like _magic_ single coils but were not like the 57 or 59. BTW: I also got to try Fralins singles that were wound like a P90 - WOW! Kinman pickups - the AVN series are powerful and have much more attack than the vintage pickups. Seymour Duncan Classic Stacks are ok. I think the simple Seymour Duncan singles are good too. |
