I was also inspired by the article about John Mooney doing that, although I don't use a wood bridge, I use a brass non-trem bridge. One of these days I'm going to see how some vintage type Tele saddles sound on it.  
 
Mooney said a company made him some strat bodies whith a lot of wood routed out, but they routed too much out and Mooney had to glue some pieces of wood back in. How the hell are you supposed to know what is too much ?  
I left mine as a "swimming pool" route, because I was afraid to rout out anymore.  
I don't know if Mooney still uses these modded strats or if not, if it was just an idea he did for a short period. But he did say he was trying to recapture a sound he got long before by carving a strat body to fit a humbucker, then using a wood pickguard. I would think he didn't remove a huge amount of wood for that.
