I have both the p/u's you mention in one guitar!  
 
It's a 70's SG with a SD '59 in the neck and DiMarzio Paf Pro in the Bridge.  
 
I find the SD 59 is a softer more midrangey p/u and well suited for the neck, great for bluesy, classic rock stuff- not great for metal.  
 
The Paf pro is an excellent neck p/u and in general an excellent all around p/u. It does clean with great chime and delivers well with almost any level of distortion/crunch (except the over the top). This one has great note definition. I chose this over the regular PAF as this one has more bite in the upper mids.  
 
I settled on these after trying Gibson HB's and hotter Dimarzios.  
BTW coil splits also sound good.  
 
In the first part of your note you mention the JB, but I have never tried that one.
