" Back in the early 80's the only JB's I could think of were James Brown and Jeff Beck..."

Damn, Steve, now you got me thinking of a pickup that sounds like James Brown. I HAVE to have THAT pickup !

Every JCM 800 I ever played was very bright, so I would think it would be a good combo with the "muddy" JB pickup

I used to use one in a strat, into an H&K 'Metal shredder' preamp, connected to a little Marshall 1x10 cab. That was a great setup and I was like a great studio player with that rig. I'd sit there and do 45 minutes of recording straight through, with hardly any mistakes. My singer thought I had turned into a machine or something. But the sound was a little too "metal" so I quickly got bored with it. I like my sound better now, but I can't go 45 minutes straight when recording anymore. Using a less 'metal' sound doesn't "hide" as much, plus makes me get more "creative" , which means thinking too hard and then losing the spontaneity, which is often deadly to music.
