Maybe 'Luthier' even means that the guy has to build guitars and not just fix them, I'm not sure. And it could also mean he must be able to do every kind of stringed instrument repair. If that's the case, I'm not a Luthier, because I haven't mastered anything other than refretting. I'm not even interested in most of that other stuff, but do a few other things besides fret-work.  
And you got me thinking about the auto mechanic comparison and I wonder if that has a lot to do with location, because when I lived in California, I came across some real bastard car mechanics, but I was just starting out in guitar repair and only dealt with Andy Brawer at 'Real Guitars' in Frisco and he seemed like a real cool guy. He sold me Dunlop fret-wire when I couldn't get it anywhere else and even gave me a free pickguard screw and said " have a good screw".  
Oh, but I just remembered that Torres is in Cal, so yeah there's some bastard guitar guys there for sure !
