Re: Snobby Luthiers
Steve ,

There's nothing "extra" or "not exciting enough" about MIJ Fenders. They are pretty much my favorites and I prefer doing re-frets on them by far over a Gibson with real pearl dots, so I guess you could say I'm a "reverse-snob luthier". I don't like doing fret-jobs on the overly-fancy fret-boards and I even have a neck-jig for doing fret-work, so the neck is made level under string tension. It's too bad I'm going out of the country for 6 months in 2 weeks, but when I get back, I'm going to finish building my "surrogate" guitar body so I can do fret-work by mail on bolt-on necks. But I strongly suggest anyone looking for fret-work check every local possibility out before sending their neck off to anyone.

I've had my share of arguing with luthiers even though I am one. I certainly won't defend any of them that act like snobs.
I've been in stupid arguments with guys like Skip Goez, who swore a local music store that I mentioned didn't exist. And also about a threaded pickup part which does exist on some pickups, but he claimed they don't. I think in his case, it's from breathing toxic fumes in the back room at Silver Strings for too long. Maybe now that he's got another place, some brain cells have come back.
Too many people think that because they like guitars, they should be able to work on them. And I guess they are even quite particular about the ones they like, which leads to the snob crap. Beware of the music store with the "repair guy" who is there because he's a friend of the owner, Like Ron Bush guitar studio in STL, where they think soaking guitars in polish will move them out the door and their "repairman or set-up man, whatever the hell he's supposed to be", doesn't even know how to properly hold a guitar while playing it-- I know , because he tried out a scalloped guitar of mine and said " There's nothing to hold on to".
Too many idiots in the world. I checked this board, just to see what I might have missed. I kind of wish I wouldn't have seen this thread.
