As you wish, you can leave the old can intact for cosmetic reasons. You then have two choices for recapping: 1) rebuild the can by pulling out the guts and putting new caps inside the can, or 2) disconnect the leads to the can underneath the chassis and then solder in some new electrolytics underneath the chassis to do your recap.

Keep in mind that over the years electrolytics have greatly shrunk in size to the extent that you can now easily fit a few 20mfds under a chassis.

Another trick is to solder a terminal strip to one of the terminals attached to the bottomside of the can and then using the terminal strip to mount your new electrolytics. This is the method I prefer.

Also, this goes without saying, but I've seen people do it, so I'll mention it. Never leave the old cap in place and solder a new cap in parallel to the old. Always completely remove the old cap electrically from the circuit. Old electrolytics can eventually short and blow your power transformer. They also tend to have leakage that keep the new paralleled caps from working optimally.
