I'm not familiar at all with these Peavey amps ... but if I had one, I would consider replacing the OT with a Hammond, or a New Sensor MOP 50. Or, if I really had the $$$, an OEI. You might keep an eye out on eBay for just an old or NOS Fender OT. There are often nice Fender OTs on eBay that go for very reasonable prices.  
 
I'm just taking a guess that this amp is just a 2x6L6 affair. Is that right? If so, then any of the above trannies should be a reasonable upgrade over the stock iron.  
 
Mercury iron tends to be quite expensive, vs. the other choices I listed above. But in addition to the options I've listed above, there are others. Various Fender replacement OTs. Antique Electronic Supply has Marshall 50watt OTs for around $70.00.
