| Casey4s | Re: Homemade cabinets "Sleebo_The_Beebo asked: Is it possible to make nice homemade amp cabinets using hand tools? I really don't want to invest in large table based power tools. I'd like to make a few cabinets that look nice with dove tail joints for example. Anybody done this easily?" Yes you can build decent cabinets without large table based tools. But making dovetails for example requires a decent router, and a dovetail jig which can get expensive. If you intend to cover the cabinet with Tolex or other suitable material, you can use butt joints if they are done properly. Remember that the back panel(s) and the baffle will keep the "box" part from RACKING. Just make sure everything is square before leaving the glue to dry & set up. Cabinets I intend to Tolex, I use pine up to a 2x12 cabinet, And 5/8" birch plywood for larger cabinets. Cabinets I intend to leave "Au Natural" I like red oak, walnut, maple, and other hardwoods. Poplar will work if you are careful picking out the lumber. In the link below is a cabinet I built with "Box" (finger) joints, which still required a router to do. http://tinyurl.com/g1pj (click on the thumbnails and they will enlarge for better detail) Good Luck, Casey4s |
