ported guitar cabs

I have currently got my 2 celestion g12H (early 70s ones) in a really crap chipboard PA cab that has had the horn tweater removed & hole sealed up. the cab also has a reflex slot at the bottom which is probably 3/2" by 18" and 6" deep that is also currently plugged. (hey, it was free) since guitar speakers have a free res at about 75Hz and guitars don't tune to less than that really, what are the consequences of unblocking the port ? should I expect any sizable difference in tone good /bad ? will I be risking the speaker cones in a ported enclosure when cranking my amp with dropped tunings ?
