We throw things in the landfill for the slightest reason, they would tend to repair something and keep using it. That radio on the shelf works just fine, even full of tubes. Why throw it out? That would explain older technologies hanging around longer. Products hung around longer. I am sure they did have a happening SS industry. I am fairly certain Sputnik was not full of 6L6s.
